Monet Tejada in 'Ego Death' — Power Book II: Ghost Season 4 Episode 5 (Mid-Season Finale)

Show: Power Book II: Ghost | Season 4, Episode 5 | Network: Starz | Aired: July 5, 2024

Ego death is a term from psychology that describes the complete loss of your sense of self. The dissolution of your identity. And that is exactly what this mid-season finale does to Monet Tejada. It strips away every layer of armor and leaves her with the one question she has been avoiding her entire life: who is she without the empire?

The Family Meeting

The episode opens with Monet calling a family meeting and demanding a reset. She wants everyone to come back to the table. She wants to forgive Dru and Diana and she wants Cane to do the same. She tells Cane that if she can forgive them, he can too.

Cane leaves. Dru leaves. Diana stays. And in a quiet moment with just the two of them, Monet promises to leave the pregnancy decision entirely to Diana. Then almost immediately suggests the baby could be a fresh start for the family. That little moment, that inability to fully let go of control even when she is trying her hardest to, is one of the most revealing things in the episode. Monet cannot stop being the boss even when she is trying to be just a mother.

Carter Shows Up

Detective Carter and his task force show up at the Tejada home unannounced and it is one of the most terrifying scenes of the season. He holds a gun to Diana's head. He arrests Dru and gives him a deadly assignment. He is using the Tejada family as instruments and there is nothing Monet can do about it in the moment.

Watching Mary in that scene is incredible. Monet has been in dangerous rooms before. But having her pregnant daughter held at gunpoint is a different kind of danger. The stillness she holds in that moment while absorbing that threat, not breaking, not revealing anything, is extraordinary acting.

The Mid Season Break

This is where Starz made us wait until September and honestly I was not okay. Everything is set up for the second half of the season to be absolutely explosive. Monet is cornered, Carter has leverage over her, and the question of what she will do next had me thinking about nothing else for weeks.

Ego Death is one of the best episodes Mary J. Blige has ever delivered. Period.
