The Season 1 finale. Y'all. The Heart of Darkness. After ten episodes of building this extraordinary world and these extraordinary characters, Power Book II: Ghost closes out its first season in a way that had me absolutely floored.
The Season 1 Journey
Before we get into this finale let me just take a moment to appreciate what this show built across its first season. We went from meeting Monet Tejada as this mysterious, powerful, and slightly terrifying figure to understanding the full complexity of who she is. The empire she runs. The family she holds together by sheer force of personality. The secrets she carries.
And through all ten episodes, Mary J. Blige never gave us anything less than a fully realized, deeply human performance. Every episode she found something new to bring to Monet. Every scene she found the truth in the moment. It was one of the most impressive debut seasons I have ever seen from an actress in a new dramatic role.
The Finale
Heart of Darkness is a reference to Joseph Conrad's famous novel about the darkness that lives inside all of us. In the context of this show it speaks directly to the journey we have been on with Monet and Tariq and everyone in their orbit. Everyone has a darkness. The question is always how deep it goes and how far you will go into it before you stop.
The finale delivers on every promise the season made. There are moments of shocking violence. There are moments of unexpected tenderness. There are reveals that change how you understand everything that came before. And at the center of all of it, as always, is Monet Tejada.

What Season 1 Proved
Season 1 of Power Book II: Ghost proved beyond any doubt that Mary J. Blige belongs at the center of a major dramatic television series. Monet Tejada is a character for the ages. Complex, contradictory, capable of great cruelty and great love. And Mary plays every single dimension of her without flinching.
