Love and War. Those two words together describe Monet Tejada's entire existence. Everything she does is an act of love or an act of war. And in the Season 2 finale those two things collide in a way that left me absolutely shattered.
The Season 2 Journey
Before we get into the finale let me just say: Season 2 of Power Book II: Ghost took everything we thought we knew about Monet Tejada and cracked it wide open. We saw her fall for Mecca. We watched her secret about Zeke get exposed. We saw her lose control of her family in ways she never anticipated. And through all of it Mary J. Blige delivered one of the most emotionally rich performances on television.
The Finale
Love and War brings every Season 2 storyline to its conclusion and it does it with the kind of dramatic ferocity that this show does better than almost anything else on TV. Tariq refuses to give up on his loved ones. Monet must move quickly to protect her family from Mecca. And Lorenzo, who has been watching and plotting from his prison release, makes his most dangerous move of the season.
The season ends with Lorenzo pulling the trigger on who he thinks is Mecca. It is a moment that changes everything for Season 3 and sets up one of the most anticipated storylines of the entire series. And Monet is at the epicenter of it all.

Mary's Season 2 Performance
Season 2 gave Mary J. Blige the richest material of her run on this show. She had to play love, obsession, exposure, loss of control, the grief of a secret being revealed, and the particular devastation of a family that is fracturing in ways she cannot stop. She played every single beat of it with complete authenticity.
If there were any doubts after Season 1 about whether she belonged at the center of this series, Season 2 ended them permanently. Monet Tejada is one of the great television characters. And Mary J. Blige is the reason why.
