Monet Tejada in 'Monster’ Power Book II: Ghost Season 1 Episode 9
Are we monsters? That is essentially the question this episode is asking, and it puts it right in Monet's lap. And what I love is that Monet does not flinch from the answer.
The Episode
Episode 9 is one of the most intense of the season. There is an unsuccessful hit, there is fallout from Cane going rogue, and there is a shooting at the bar that puts Dru in the hospital. Monet is dealing with all of it simultaneously, and the way she responds tells you everything about who she is.
When the shooting breaks out at the bar, Monet does not freeze. She does not panic. She moves. She protects her people and she starts calculating what needs to happen next before the smoke has even cleared. That is Monet Tejada. That is Mary J. Blige showing you what this woman is made of.

The Monster Question
Effie tells Tariq in this episode that both she and he are monsters and that he should make peace with that. It is one of the most honest moments in the season. And it echoes something the show has been building with Monet all along: what do you become when survival requires you to do things that should be unthinkable?
Monet's answer, and Mary's answer through her performance, is that you become whatever you need to become. And then you live with it. That is not cynicism. It is the hard truth of a woman who made her choices a long time ago and has never looked back.
The Finale Setup
By the end of this episode the Season 1 finale is set up perfectly. Tariq announces he is going to confess to Ghost's murder. Cane is on the warpath. Monet is watching all of it unfold with that look she has. The one that tells you she already knows what is going to happen next. The Queen always knows.
