My house, my rules. If there is one line from Season 1 that sums up Monet Tejada, it is those four words. And we get them right here in Episode 3.

The Episode

This episode puts Tariq officially in business with the Tejadas and the tension that creates is everything. Tariq is smart, resourceful, and desperate enough to do things he knows he should not. But the moment he steps into Monet's world he is not just dealing with a drug organization. He is dealing with a woman who has been running this game since before he was old enough to understand what the game was.

One of the standout moments of this episode involves Monet discovering that Diana has been hiding a burner phone. The way she handles it says everything about who she is as a mother and as a boss. She does not yell. She does not get emotional. She pulls that phone out of Diana's pocket, looks her daughter in the eye, and smashes it on the floor. 'My house, my rules.' Done.

Monet and Lorenzo

We also get more of the dynamic between Monet and Lorenzo this episode, and it is layered in the most interesting way. Even from prison, Lorenzo has opinions about how Monet is running things. He tells her Diana should be allowed to go to school. He tells her to stop babying Dru. And Monet listens, not because she is weak, but because she is strategic. She knows which battles to pick.

That relationship is one of the most complex things about this show. Monet runs everything but Lorenzo still believes he runs her. The truth is more complicated than either of them wants to admit.

Mary in This Episode

Mary is absolutely magnetic here. The scene where Monet confronts Diana is one of my favorite early Monet moments in the entire series. There is so much happening beneath the surface of that confrontation. Love, control, fear, pride. Mary layers all of it without saying a word beyond those four. That is the level of acting we are talking about with this performance.
