Monet Tejada in 'Selfless Acts?' — Power Book II: Ghost Season 2 Episode 2

Show: Power Book II: Ghost |  Season 2, Episode 2  |  Network: Starz  |  Aired: November 28, 2021

Selfless Acts with a question mark. That question mark is doing a lot of work in this title because it is asking us to examine every act of apparent selflessness in this episode and wonder about the real motivation behind it. And when it comes to Monet Tejada, the answer is never simple.

The Episode

Episode 2 of Season 2 is where we start to see just how distracted Monet is becoming. Diana is helping her repair the business after the chaos of Season 1, and Diana is sharp enough to notice that her mother is not fully present. Something has Monet's attention and it is not the operation.

That something is Mecca. The reappearance of this man from her past has cracked open something in Monet that she thought was sealed shut a long time ago. And the episode makes you feel that crack through every scene Mary is in.

The Sugar Moment

One of the most interesting scenes of this episode involves the product being switched with sugar. When Diana brings the news to Monet, expecting an explosive reaction, Monet laughs. She literally laughs it off and suggests they make a cake. That moment tells you so much about where Monet's head is right now. She is untethered in a way she has never been before. And that is genuinely terrifying.

Can You Stand The Rain

There is a gorgeous, eerie detail in this episode where a red car keeps appearing near Monet blasting the New Edition song Can You Stand The Rain. It is clearly connected to Mecca and her past with him. And Mary plays Monet's reaction to it with this mixture of longing and dread that is absolutely beautiful.

This episode is proof that Season 2 is going to be more emotionally complex than Season 1. Monet is not just the queen of the operation this season. She is a woman whose heart is getting in the way of her crown. And Mary makes every second of that conflict feel completely real.
