Power Book II: Ghost — The Complete Guide to Mary J. Blige as Monet Tejada

Where It All Started — June 2020

I have to keep this original post because it captures exactly how I felt before the show even premiered. Back in June 2020 I wrote:

The OGs meet some new heavy hitters September 6 on Starz. The legacy lives on. Power Book II: Ghost premieres September 6.

We are ready and still waiting and waiting on Monet to come on. Power Book II: Ghost. Will Monet's fashion style be just as fly or flyer than @therealmaryjblige? Hummm, I think I may need the details on her wardrobe, anybody else feel that way? Details, Details, Details.

Y'all. I wrote that in June 2020 before a single episode had aired. Before I knew what Monet Tejada was about to do to my life. Before I knew I would spend the next four years building an entire website dedicated to documenting every episode, every outfit, every performance. I had no idea what was coming. None of us did.

What came was one of the greatest television performances of the last decade. And I was here for every single second of it.

About Power Book II: Ghost

Power Book II: Ghost is the Starz spin-off series that premiered on September 6, 2020 and ran for four seasons until its series finale on October 4, 2024. Created by Courtney A. Kemp, the show follows Tariq St. Patrick as he navigates college life, his family's legal troubles, and an entanglement with the Tejada drug family that changes everything.

But let us be completely honest about something. While Tariq is technically the main character of this show, Mary J. Blige as Monet Stewart Tejada became the reason most people tuned in every single week. She is that good. She has always been that good. And if you have been following this site from the beginning you know I have been saying that from day one.

Who Is Monet Tejada?

Monet Stewart Tejada is the matriarch of the Tejada drug family. She ran the empire while her husband Lorenzo was incarcerated. She is a mother, a boss, a strategist, a survivor. She is ruthless and loving at the same time. She will protect her children at any cost and she will also hold them accountable in ways that sometimes break your heart to watch.

Tariq St. Patrick once compared the Tejada family to chess pieces. Lorenzo is the King. Monet is the Queen. He was right. The Queen does not chase. She positions herself, she waits, and she moves with devastating precision. That is Monet Tejada in four seasons of Power Book II: Ghost.

And that is Mary J. Blige in what I believe is the defining dramatic performance of her career.

Mary J. Blige as Monet — Why This Performance Matters

Before this show Mary J. Blige was already one of the greatest artists of her generation. Nine Grammy Awards. Eighty million records sold worldwide. An Oscar nomination for Mudbound. A Hollywood Walk of Fame star. The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul.

But Power Book II: Ghost gave her something different. It gave her four seasons, forty episodes, and the space to build a character from the ground up across years of storytelling. And she did something extraordinary with that space.

She made Monet Tejada one of the most complex, compelling, fully realized women in the history of television drama. Not just in Black television. In television period. Monet is right up there with the greats. And Mary is the reason why.

SEASON 1 (2020) — Introducing the Queen

Season 1 premiered on September 6, 2020 and introduced the world to Monet Tejada. From the very first episode she commanded every scene she was in. This is the season that established who she was — the unshakeable matriarch who ran the empire while nobody else could. Ten episodes of pure foundation building and Mary was extraordinary in every single one.

SEASON 2 (2021-2022) — The Mecca Season

Season 2 is where Monet Tejada became even more than a boss. It is the season where we saw her as a woman. The return of Dante Mecca Spears, her old flame and the secret father of Zeke, cracked open something in Monet that she had kept sealed for decades. And Mary J. Blige played every second of that opening with devastating emotional honesty. The dinner from hell in Episode 8 alone is worth the entire season.

•        S2E7 — Forced My Hand  —  Do not corner this woman.

•        S2E8 — Drug Related  —  The dinner from hell. Diana drops every bomb.

•        S2E9 — A Fair Fight  —  Monet must rely on Mecca.

•        S2E10 — Love and War  —  The Season 2 finale that shattered everything.

SEASON 3 (2023) — Grief, Revenge, and Power

Season 3 is Monet on a mission. After losing Zeke she entered this season with grief that had nowhere to go except forward into revenge. Lorenzo is killed in Episode 5. Whitman comes for her. Her children betray her. And she ends the season more powerful than she started it, even after being shot. Season 3 is also where Monet's wardrobe reaches its peak — the Versace Fendace Patchwork Blazer and the Louis Vuitton Mink pieces in Episodes 8 and 9 are among the most iconic looks in the entire series.

•        S3E1 — Your Perception Your Reality  —  Monet on a mission. Season 3 premiere.

•        S3E2 — Need vs Greed  —  Federal investigator Whitman comes for her.

•        S3E3 — Human Capital  —  Getting closer to the truth about Zeke.

•        S3E4 — The Land of Opportunity  —  Seizing every angle available.

•        S3E5 — No More Second Chances  —  Lorenzo is killed. Everything shifts.

•        S3E6 — Land of Lies  —  Monet makes her power play.

•        S3E7 — Deal or No Deal  —  Every interaction is a negotiation.

•        S3E8 — Sacrifice  —  Versace Fendace and one of Mary's best episodes.

•        S3E9 — A Last Gift  —  Head to toe Gucci. The penultimate episode.

•        S3E10 — Divided We Stand  —  Season 3 finale. Shot but still standing. Still the Queen.

SEASON 4 (2024) — The Final Chapter

The final season. Ten episodes. The end of Monet Tejada's story. Season 4 is split into two parts — the first five episodes aired in summer 2024 and the final five returned in September. It builds to one of the most emotional moments in the entire series: Monet dying at Noma's wedding protecting Cane, her last words being My babies. Mary J. Blige gave everything she had in this final season and it shows in every single episode.

•        S4E1 — I Don't Die Easy  —  Final season premiere. Fendi leather jacket.

•        S4E2 — To Thine Own Self  —  Louis Vuitton Mink Coat. Monet wants back in the game.

•        S4E3 — Birthright  —  Monet realizes her kids are not telling the truth.

•        S4E4 — The Reckoning  —  Dru says everything. Diana pushes Monet to the ground.

•        S4E5 — Ego Death  —  Mid-season finale. Carter holds a gun to Diana's head.

•        S4E6 — The Devil's Playground  —  No safe ground anywhere in the final season.

•        S4E7 — I Can't Fix This  —  The moment Monet admits she cannot fix what is broken.

•        S4E8 — Higher Calling  —  Monet and Tariq team up as unlikely allies.

•        S4E9 — Married to the Game  —  My babies. The end of the Queen.

•        S4E10 — Ghost in the Machine  —  Series finale. Monet's legacy lives on through her children.

The Legacy of Monet Tejada

Monet Stewart Tejada appeared in all 40 episodes of Power Book II: Ghost across four seasons, from the premiere on September 6, 2020 to the series finale on October 4, 2024. She began as a mysterious and powerful matriarch and became, across the run of the show, one of the most compelling characters in recent television history.

She was ruthless. She was calculating. She made terrible choices. She also loved her children with everything she had. She sacrificed more than any of them will ever fully know. She died protecting the son who had been hardest to love. And her last words were My babies.

Mary J. Blige gave us four seasons of extraordinary dramatic performance. She made Monet Tejada real. And this site exists to make sure that every episode, every outfit, and every performance gets the recognition it deserves.
