Season 3 of Power Book II: Ghost premiered on St. Patrick's Day March 17, 2023, and the timing felt intentional. This is a season about legacy, about what you are willing to fight and die for, and about the ghosts that follow you no matter how far you run. And Monet Tejada is carrying more ghosts into this season than any character on the show.

The Season 3 premiere picks up with Monet set ablaze by the death of Zeke, her secret firstborn son. She is willing to pay any price to avenge him and to keep the rest of her children in line. At the same time she is working closely with Davis MacLean to solve Zeke's murder and keep the feds off her trail.

Monet on a Mission

What makes Season 3 Monet different from any version of her we have seen before is the grief. She loved Zeke in a way she could never fully express because of the secret surrounding him. His death has opened something in her that she cannot close. And Mary plays that open wound with devastating honesty.

The premiere does not let Monet wallow. She is not the type. But she channels the grief into something dangerous: a mission. She is going to find out who killed her son and she is going to make them pay. And God help anyone who gets in her way.

The New Dynamic with Lorenzo

Season 3 also has to deal with the fallout of Lorenzo's revelation at the end of Season 2. He pulled the trigger thinking he was killing Mecca. The consequences of that, and what it means for the Tejada family going forward, is one of the central tensions of this premiere. The family is fractured. And Monet is trying to hold it together while simultaneously pursuing revenge.

Mary J. Blige in this premiere is extraordinary. She is carrying grief, rage, love, and strategy all at once and she makes it look effortless. Season 3 is going to be something.
